Hello! I’m Melissa!
I am Bubbly, Boisterous, Glass Half-Full, Always Giggling kind of Chick. I get along with the dudes as much as the gals. I will cry behind the camera with your moms, laugh with your dads, shoot tequila with your grandma and dance with your flower girls.
I come from the southern most regions of Orange County, California. Where the ocean is dark and cold, but everywhere else is sunshine and smiles. I spent the better part of a decade with a camera in my hand, switching from school to school looking for the right combination of creativity and business to make my heart sing. I didn’t find it in the time, but I did finish school and after having traipsed through San Francisco, Denver, San Diego and back again, it was time to open my heart to the next big gust of wind to blow me across the map.
It came in the form of a wedding invitation to come to paradise, so I booked a ticket and came to Playa del Carmen. That was in 2008. I fell in love with this beautiful corner of the world and I couldn’t wait to come back. The opportunity arose when the photographers at said wedding needed someone to run their studio – lucky for me my bestie who got married pitched me and 3 weeks later I was living here.
After a number of years working customer service for others, I longed to connect with my own clients, to be their voice of guidance through the crazy process of planning a wedding from afar, all the way to and through the actual day. In all of my years of shooting I always knew I had a knack for allowing others to feel comfortable in front of my lens. And if I don’t bulldoze you down with my big crazy eyes and bubbly personality, then it will be my sarcasm and amazing artistry that will win you over. Just kidding, sort of.
As a Destination Wedding Photographer, I’m so blessed to do what I do. I love living vicariously through you guys and gals, on these super emotionally charged days. They’re full of fun and laughter when you want them to be and it’s always my goal to keep you in that headspace and capture the magic as it happens.
When asked about my approach, I always have a little twinge of I don’t know. Feel free to call bullshit – I totally know. My photography approach is with a big fat smile, an enormous open heart and arms outreached to envelope you in a hug. My approach is wanting to fall in love with you and your family (birth or chosen) so that I feel like I’m part of it. I want to know crazy uncle Larry who always has too much to drink and lovely Aunt Maude the martyr. I want to understand your connection to these people, how you overcome your annoyance with them in an abundance of love and why you’ve asked these people to bear witness to your love on this day. Ultimately, I long for those in between moments when your cute and crooked smile is a 1000% genuine. Not your I’ve mastered my selfie face from an arm outreached high, but the smile you have when you’re unaware that a little milk just came out of your nose, and, you may have peed yourself just a little and you’re beaming radiant energy into the universe. Please – beam. It’s so sexy!
My Loca Lolli is a street rescue I got at a shelter, she started out with a big head and super skinny body, like a LolliPop. Turns out she had humans previously and they trained her well, but maybe didn’t love her a ton, so she decided she wanted me to be her new human and I am so lucky for it. I cannot imagine my life, nor her Instagram, without her. :)
I so look forward to getting to know you, seeing what kinds of fun adventures we can have together and create some awesome memories along the way.
Hugs, Kisses and a little parting thought that will eventually become yet another tattoo one day.
Be Happy for this Moment,
This Moment is your Life.
